The global positioning system (GPS) is used to keep track of everything from people to products. The majority of us understand how GPS works thanks to the navigation systems we use in our cars. These small devices can pinpoint where we are at any given moment and accurately tell us when and where we need to turn onto another street and how long until we reach our destination. This same system is used to keep track of people, vehicles, and products. Different people and companies use GPS tracking for different reasons and some of them are quite surprising.

The movie, Rat Race, is an excellent example if GPS tracking. Each race contestant is being monitored through GPS tracking so that their progress in the race can be tracked. Their exact location at any moment is known. While this movie is hilarious and seems ridiculous at times, this is an actual use of GPS tracking. Race contestants in long distance races or in unconventional races such as gliding can be tracked. This also discourages cheating.

When we consider GPS tracking, most of us associate it with vehicles. This is a very common use of a GPS tracker. Many vehicles include a tracking device, especially those used by companies. A company with a fleet of trucks can easily keep track of where their products are at any given moment. They can accurately give delivery times and tell if a delivery is running early, late, or on schedule. Additionally, they can tell where their employees are. An employee that is supposed to be on the road rustling up sales for a company, better actually be doing so, because if not, the GPS tracking can tell the boss that the employee is actually at home. Uh oh. However, one of the best uses of GPS tracking is if your vehicle is stolen. It can be activated in case of theft and your vehicle can be found.

GPS tracking is extremely useful in today’s society. It helps businesses run more effectively and helps us to retrieve and analyze data. Knowledge is power. While some people are concerned that GPS tracking could potentially turn into a Big Brother scenario, at this moment, it is extremely helpful in today’s society!
